Phishing can disrupt the lives of people who work and rely on the internet for their daily tasks. The way to prevent this is to have good online security behaviors and to have an effective anti-malware program installed on your system. ESET NOD32 Antivirus can protect you and your family from phishing attempts that can steal your data and privacy.

Phishing Defined

Cybercriminals and hackers use phishing to get at user’s personal information, often through instant messaging and email spoofing. This usually involves additional fake websites that users are tricked into visiting and entering their information. Many unsuspecting users fall for this because they may not be able to spot a phishing attempt from a legitimate website.

Phishing Vs. Spam

Phishing and spam are very similar, but they are not the same. Many emails today are spam sent to large quantities of email accounts. Most email accounts have the ability to block email addresses for this very reason. Spam will only ask for users to purchase a product or just to provide information to them. Phishing, however, will direct users to websites, online forms, or give response messages where they can provide their information to a hacker or cyber thief.

ESET NOD 32 Stops Phishing

Antivirus and anti-spyware software usually include the ability to prevent phishing. Anti-phishing protection is included with ESET NOD32 Antivirus with its ability to block web sites that are known to distribute phishing-related content.

You can enable anti-phishing in ESET NOD32 Antivirus any time by navigating to the Advanced Setup -> Web and email -> Anti-Phishing protection.

You will receive phishing attempt notifications whenever you visit these types of websites. You can choose to ignore this warning if you want to, although this is not recommended. If you visit a website that you find is trying to phish for information, you can report it to ESET using their “Report” link.

To Recap…

Phishing is one of the ways hackers and cybercriminals can steal your personal information and use it for their own gain. Having ESET NOD32 Antivirus installed and running on your system can help protect yourself and your family from phishing attempts.
